Gynaecomastia means enlargement of the male breast. It is quite common and can affect one or both sides of the chest due to several problems such as hormonal changes, weight gain, genetics, some medications/specific conditions or most of the times for no specific condition at all. If the chest enlargement is mainly due to excess fat, losing weight and exercising may improve its appearance. However, firm glandular breast tissue usually does not disappear completely with exercise or dieting which is why some men continue to have that problem despite losing weight.

Some men notice a soft, fatty chest, while others have a firm lump of breast tissue behind the nipple. Sometimes both fat and glandular tissue are present. Although gynaecomastia is usually not harmful, it can make men feel uncomfortable or self-conscious, particularly when you are wearing fitted clothes, going to the gym, swimming or taking your shirt off.

PROCEDURE EXPLAINED The amount of fat, glandular tissue and excess skin varies from person to person, so the surgical technique is planned individually Liposuction can remove the unwanted fat and sculpt the chest. Gland removal/ Adenomyectomy done to remove firm breast tissue behind the nipple, through a small, strategically placed incision, usually around the edge of the areola. Skin tightening or skin removal (if indicated) done only if there is significant loose skin and ptosis of the nipple and areola, particularly after substantial weight loss (additional surgery maybe required.).

AFTER SURGERY CARE You may have some swelling, bruising and tightness of the chest during the initial recovery period. These gradually improve. A compression garment is generally advised for a period after surgery.Light activities can be resumed relatively soon, while strenuous exercise should be avoided until it is safe.

The aim is to achieve a flatter, firmer and more masculine-looking chest. Gynaecomastia surgery can provide a long-lasting improvement by maintaining a stable weight and addressing any underlying hormonal or medical cause.

If you are uncomfortable with the appearance of your chest, gynaecomastia surgery can help you achieve a more natural and confident chest contour.
